Clever Poppy Master Bedroom Makeover

Our master bedroom makeover has been a long time coming, and now I love the result so much that I wish I had done it sooner! I put our bedroom pretty low down the list of areas in the house to renovate, because I figured we could 'make do' and visitors didn't really see the space. But then I decided that it was so meaningful to have a space I loved to retreat to at the end of the day - and good to end the busy day in a peaceful setting we could relax in.

Just like the nursery renovation I recently did (here's the link), I decided I wanted this space to be a mixture of decor I love and DIY pieces that I've made. Here are the projects that will be showcased in our room over the next few months:

    • DIY Herringbone Headboard with Resene Paint - blog coming soon
    • DIY Drawers Makeover with Vinyl Home - blog coming soon
    • DIY Giant Loom-Free Wall Hanging - downloadable project coming soon
    • DIY Juju Hats - downloadable project coming soon

I knew right from the start that I wanted a scandi style bedroom. I also was keen for the room to have a slightly feminine feeling to it so I decided on a white, blush andngrey colour palette with touches of copper, concrete and blonde wood. I found a blog by the lovely Imogen (from Immy and Indi) which outlined her tips for creating a scandi look - these were to use linen, layered throws, pendant lighting, cushions and artwork to help create the look. I've definitely used these tips across the room (thankyou!), plus I have some tips of my own below:

  • Keep it light with small bedrooms - Our room is pretty tiny, so I made sure most of the walls were a beautiful crisp white (Resene Alabaster) and the furniture is also white, to give an illusion of space. This gives a great backdrop against which to style your space.
  • Shelving - if you are like me and want to change up your look quite often, invest in some classic and simple shelving on which you can showcase your chosen look.
  • Add depth - our room is quite small but I wanted it to have a real atmosphere to it, so I added a beautifully warm grey feature wall behind the bed (Resene Half Rakaia). This colour was light enough to make the space still feel nice and airy but has enough punch to add instant feeling to the space. Resene Rakaia also has a lovely touch of warmth to it so goes beautifully with the blush and copper tones in the room.
  • Add touches made with love - I'm all about DIY, so my advice is to add a few pieces to the room that either you've made or have been handmade by a small business. Pieces like this are so special and meaningful, and will add some character to the space.
  • Texture -  I can't recommend this enough! Adding texture through bedding, throws, curtains and the bedhead is a wonderful way to make the space inviting and warm (essential for a bedroom especially!). For example, the curtains are a beautiful soft linen texture and the chunky throw makes you want to jump right in.

I have had such a ball putting this room together, and most of it is because of the amazing brands I've worked with! Check out the list below for where its all from:

  • Resene paints - The walls are Spacecoat Low Sheen Waterborne Enamel in Alabaster and the feature wall is Half Rakaia
  • Immy and Indi - blush button cushion, square marble tray and Zakkia Concrete Ghost Vase
  • Me and My Trend - Pink Tub Vase, White Antler Hook, White Mesh Flower Pot and Large Peach to Lilac Ombre Cylinder Vase
